On February 26 local time, the Unit 1 of the Ratawi 1GW Photovoltaic Solar Farm Project achieved reverse power transmission upon first attempt, laying a solid foundation for the project’s grid connection. This is Iraq’s largest PV project under construction, which is undertaken by a consortium comprising Energy China International, China Energy Engineering Group Tianjin Electric Power Construction Co., Ltd., and Southwest Electric Power Design Institute Co., Ltd. of China Power Engineering Consulting Group.

Located approximately 70 kilometers east of Basra, Iraq, it is the country’s first large-scale centralized solar power station. Once completed, it is expected to supply an estimated 2,876 GWh of clean electricity annually to the local area, equivalent to reducing about 2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, thereby significantly increasing the share of renewable energy in Iraq’s energy mix.
