On July 14 local time, the handover ceremony for the China-aided Wind Power Project in Tonga was held. Organized and supervised by the Agency for International Economic Cooperation, Ministry of Commerce of the PRC, the Project was constructed under a PC contract by China Gezhouba Group Electric Power Co., Ltd. (a subsidiary of CEEC) and designed by China Energy Engineering Group Hunan Electric Power Design Institute Co., Ltd. His Majesty King Tupou VI of Tonga graced the occasion and inaugurated the Project by cutting the ribbon.
In his address, Tongan Prime Minister Aisake Valu Eke extended gratitude for China’s support, emphasizing that the Project will bring widespread benefits to the people and advance Tonga’s strategic goal of “achieving 100% renewable energy generation by 2035.”
With a total installed capacity of 2.25 MW, the Project stands as Tonga’s largest renewable energy project in terms of both single-unit and aggregate capacities. The Project achieved full-capacity grid connection and operation on February 19, 2025 with its groundbreaking on May 3, 2024. Upon completion, the Project generates 3.61 GWh of electricity annually, reducing diesel imports by approximately 800 tonnes per year and alleviating power shortages for approximately 100,000 residents. It contributes to increasing the proportion of renewable energy in Tonga’s national electricity generation mix.
