First Unit of West Africa’s Largest Biomass Power Plant Connected to Grid

On October 8 local time, Unit 1 of the Biovea 46MW Biomass Power Plant in Côte d’Ivoire was connected to the national grid for the first time. Developed by CEEC, it represents the largest biomass power plant currently under construction in West Africa. The milestone marks a critical step toward the plant’s full commercial operation.

The successful grid connection demonstrates the unit’s ability to deliver electricity to the national grid of Côte d’Ivoire. The unit will now enter the load test run phase, where performance and reliability will be thoroughly tested to ensure long-term stable and efficient operation.

As a flagship clean energy and livelihood initiative in West Africa, the Biovea plant will convert abundant local agricultural waste into clean energy. It is expected to annually generate 348GWh of electricity and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 180,000 metric tons, helping to ease regional power shortages. During construction, the project also created significant local employment, delivering both economic and environmental benefits.
