On June 21 local time, during the Africa Energy Forum 2025, CEEC signed an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction contract with British independent power producer Globeleq for the Red Sand 153MW/612MWh Battery Energy Storage Project in South Africa — the largest single-site battery energy storage facility in Africa. This marks a significant breakthrough for CEEC in the South African market.
Located approximately 100 kilometers southeast of Upington in Northern Cape Province, the Project is part of South Africa’s first Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (ESIPPPP). It covers the construction of a battery energy storage system, step-up substation, switching station, substation, and associated transmission lines. The contract took effect immediately upon signing. As a flagship project in South Africa’s renewable energy sector, it will optimize the country’s energy mix and enhance grid stability upon commissioning, poised to become a model for energy storage development across Africa.
